DIY Tips to Clean Area Rugs

Area rugs can sure add glory to you home and make the room seem like a million bucks. But often, they are vulnerable to many household issues that can shorten their lifespan. From everyday dust and dirt to mishaps like spills and stains, area rugs face daily threats that cause damage. Sometimes your rugs might need more than just daily vacuuming. Below are tips to help you clean your area rugs.

Before you attempt to clean any area rug by yourself, keep in mind that rugs of expensive materials like antique carpets and other delicate fabric items may need to be dealt with by professional carpet cleaning experts. Besides daily vacuuming, area rugs should only be cleaned when they are visibly dirty or have an odour.

Vacuum both sides.

Thoroughly vacuum your area rug on either sides. If you find the dust still lingering on, you could use a brush and lightly dust through the fabric of your area rug. You could also try giving a few whacks to let out all the dust. Be as gentle as possible to not damage the area rug.

Set up an outdoor area to clean your rug.

It’s always best to clean your rugs outdoors. Dusting indoors can trigger an allergic reaction in certain members of the family. Set up an area for you to carry out the cleaning process, preferably away from a lawn. The cleaning station should also have a rope to hang the rug. It will be handy.

Use mild shampoos for cleaning.

For minor stains on area rugs, you could use rug shampoos to help you with the cleaning process. Make sure to use a mild cleansing agent or else it may damage the fabric of your area rug. It is also a good practice to test your area rug shampoo on a small patch before applying it to the whole rug. Apply the solution to a small patch, leave it on for a few hours and rinse off. If you find your rug with no damage, it’s safe to use your cleaning shampoo.

Rinse your area rug.

Once you have shampooed your area rug, its time to give it a rinse. Hang the rug out in the open or in the outdoor cleaning station and use a hose pipe to rinse off any cleansing agent. You could also use a sturdy brush to scrub over your rug’s fabrics, so that the shampoo works its way deep through the fabric. It’s important that you follow this step well. Take your time and rinse well so that you are not left with any residue.

Dry and vacuum the rug well.

This step requires you to have a lot of patience. You could use a squeegee to help get rid of the excess water. Hang the rug outdoor to let the water drain. Let it dry completely before you move it back inside your home. It may take an entire day or probably even a weekend to dry completely. When the rug is completely dry, it may feel a bit stiff which is completely normal. Give your rug one last vacuum to soften the fabric and make it feel smooth. This should make your carpet look as good as new.
